There’s no better place to get a panoramic view of Ho Chi Minh City than at the first skybar in Vietnam: CHILL Skybar. Perfect for post-dinner drinks, visitors will be blown away by the views of the city skyline, with the only thing in between being a glass fence.

This newly opened skybar (October 2011) is designed by DWP Thailand, the firm behind world-renowned Sirocco in Bangkok, which explains its lofty concept.

Visiting HCMC is not complete without a trip to at least one historic landmark, so make it the former Hotel de Ville (at the intersection of Nguyen Hue and Le Thanh Ton), which has been turned into HCMC city hall. Although visitation to this French colonial building is limited as it’s now the office of the city’s People Committee, stop by at night when the building is illuminated to take in its traffic-stopping colonial architecture.

Ngoc Suong Marina is a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike who come for the fresh seafood served here. The majority of their cuisines are Vietnamese, majority of the dishes are Vietnamese specialties. Generally more suited for family gatherings rather than a romantic dinner for two, Ngoc Suong Marina serves both indoors and out.
Some recommendations include mushroom seafood hotpot, crabs and basically anything seafood. Beer and some wines are available as well.

Designed to feel more like a contemporary Vietnamese residence rather than a hotel, the 252-room Park Hyatt Saigon’s attention to detail extends to a range of commissioned artworks displayed throughout the hotel.

All rooms are fitted with multi-channel satellite LCD TV, a work desk with broadband Internet access, marble-tiled bathrooms with separate bath and rain shower, luxurious bathrobes, slippers and bathroom amenities, in-room safety-deposit box. There are also three rooms to accommodate physically challenged guests.

Where to shop

We’re sure you’ve had your fair share of shopping in designer malls, so for something a bit different head to L’usine, a fashion boutique, café and art gallery all combined in one. Inspired by the Indochina era, L’usine’s founders have designed a space that showcases global fashion, with a touch of modern Vietnamese creativity.

Housed in a French colonial building, this space has been through two wars, reincarnated as a ballroom, a boutique hotel, an apartment building and government offices. Now, it’s transformed into 1930s French-style garment factory.

The central retail space connected to an exclusive gallery with exhibitions and live performances that change monthly. Both areas are fronted by an airy cafe and terrace where you can enjoy freshly sandwiches and home-style cakes.

With exclusive labels imported from all over the world, L’usine’s racks and walkways are draped in contemporary styles that fit the city’s temperate climate. L’usine also offers lifestyle accessories such as shoes, homeware, knickknacks and a range vintage bicycles.

Cheap Vietnam flight from Ho Chi Minh to Hue

Finding monuments and old buildings is rarely difficult, but if you want the sense and feel of history, a little effort is needed. You can’t go wrong heading to Hue, the seat of power of the Nguyen emperors of Vietnam. Declared in 1993 as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hue, though devastated during the Vietnam War (remember TET?) has still a sampling of the Nguyen palaces, temples and pagodas as well as the tombs of these early Vietnamese rulers. And it has more than a few bastions of the later French rule of Indochine. Located on the Perfume River, its misty atmosphere reminds visitors of its once mysterious imperial past akin to China’s forbidden city. In spite of the influx of tourists, Hue has retained its charm as a quiet little town. But maybe not for long.

Although we had been wanting to visit Hue because of its history, we were not there by choice. The gods must have listened as we missed our flight coming from Hue - Ho Chi Minh. Vietnam Airlines just kept delaying flights in our itinerary and this was the worst because we finally decided to sleep in Hue after a full day wait at the airport. Four flights, four disasters…a new record for us in completely dysfunctional airlines! The first delay was great as we had a chance to go around and see the city. We rented a car and just went for an instant tour of the must see places in Hue. It was a glimpse at Vietnam’s past and we really lucked out with the driver,so it was impressive, informative and entertaining.

Ho Chi Minh to Hue in Doan Ngo Festival

Ho Chi Minh to Hue in Doan Ngo Festival

Cheap flight from Ho Chi Minh to Hue ,i feel love Hue about: people, sight, dish,… Hue is honest and sweet.

I came to Hue during Tet Doan Ngo (Doan Ngo festival, a minor Buddhist festival) and it was impossible for me to find an open restaurant or shop in town. Vietnam’s ancient capital, booming city and a world renown tourist area, yet Hue is not at all noisy, rushed or commercialized like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Hue is honest and sweet. It is tranquil like the Perfume River that flows through it, majestic like the Royal Palace and tombs that would never let its secrets out. Geography To be precise, Hue city is the capital of Thue Thien – Hue province. Hue lies on the banks of the Huong (Perfume) river, in the narrow central of Vietnam, only a few miles west from the sea. History Hue first assumed its role as a capital city, during the Trinh – Nguyen civil war, when it was the capital of South Vietnam. In 1802, Nguyen Anh succeeded in unifying his rule over both North and South Vietnam, forming the Nguyen dynasty. Hue remained the capital of Vietnam until the end of feudalism in 1945.

During the Vietnam War, Hue  held a strategic positioning as it was near the dividing line between North and South. The city’s elegant and refined architecture witnessed and suffered from one of the most lengthy and bloody battles in the War, the Battle of Hue (during the Tet offensive 1968). Many of Hue’s palaces, tombs and temples were destroyed by American bombs and bullets, as well as by neglect in restoration by the Vietnamese government during early years of independence (they saw these historical artifacts as remains of the oppressing feudal system).

Hue  has now been returned the peace, attention and protection it clearly deserves.  The remains of the Inner City (where the Royal family lived), tombs and temples offer insight into Vietnam’s past and rich culture. Hue  has been certified by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Hue royal  music (nha nhac cung dinh) is also considered a UNESCO intangible heritage. Religion Hue is the center of Buddhist worship in Vietnam, with many temples and tombs.

Hanoi to hue trip

  • It should be easy to go from Hanoi to Hue. They’re in the same country, they both start with “H”. In fact, all the major Vietnamese cities all start with “H” – Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Hue- Ho Chi Minh – so it’s kind of hard to get lost. The trip should be easy, and of course, the operative word here is “should”. It all works, in theory.
  • Everyone told us not to worry, because they could make the arrangements for us. Hanoi is a city of wheeler-dealers, so we had no reason to doubt that. Duyen’s cousin said that he could get us a plane ticket. Vu, the smarmy manager of our hotel, offered us a car and driver for the rest of our trip to Saigon. We had to admire his nerve, first after the Chuck Norris driver he got for us in Hanoi, but mainly for the outrageous price he made up. Being a crook is kind of like pregnancy. Either you are or you aren’t, so why do things half-way? But since everything is a negotiation, even a bowl of soup, we didn’t say no. View full article »

Description

Hue, once the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, is known as the cultural heart of Vietnam. Several sources claim that the name ‘Hue’ was derived from “Hoà”, meaning harmony, which could be the reason for the Nguyen dynasty to choose Hue as its emperor city. Lying along the banks of the Perfume River (Hương Giang) and embedded in the mountains, Hue has managed to preserve its grandeur and former glory along with its unique atmosphere. For more than a century, from 1802 to 1945 to be exact, Hue was the capital of Vietnam and the emperor’s domicile. Its citadel and the Forbidden City are truly important historical destinations that are worth-visiting. In 1993 the UNESCO declared a number of monuments in Hue as world cultural heritage sites. Hue: places of interest •

Thien Mu Pagoda (see article on Thien Mu Pagoda) The Thiên Mụ Pagoda was built in 1601 during the reign of Southern Vietnam ruler Nguyễn Hoàng (1525-1613). According to an old legend, a Holy Lady who often appeared and predicted that a popular leader of the country would one day establish a pagoda on this hill to bring peace and prosperity to the people. The ruler is said to have built this pagoda in order to fulfil the prophecy. Thiên Mụ (Pagoda of the heavenly woman) also lies on the banks of the Perfume River (Hương Giang), approximately 5 km from Hue. • Minh Mang Tomb (see article on Minh Mang Tomb) The Minh Mang Tomb is one of the most interesting emperor tombs in Hue. Found on Cam Ke Hill, 12 km outside the city on the west bank of the Perfume River, the tomb could be reached by car or preferably by boat. Emperor Minh Mang (1820 – 1841) was the second son of Emperor Gia Long, who founded Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), the last known dynasty in Vietnam’s history. The Minh Mang Tomb is renowned for its remarkable architecture which blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Like other tombs from the same period, the general elements of this tomb’s architecture are its outer-walls, triple gate (Tam Quan Gate), Salutation Court, Stele House, temples, lakes, pavilions, gardens, and the tomb itself.

Tu Duc Tomb (see article on Tu Duc Tomb) Located in a narrow valley 8 km from Hue (Duong Xuan Thuong village), Tự Đức Tomb is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture among the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty. Lying in a lush pine forest, this tomb is known as Emperor Tự Đức’s (1848-83) final resting place. Of all the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty, his reign was the longest.

Khai Dinh Tomb (see article on Khai Dinh Tomb) Emperor Khải Định, who ruled from 1916 till 1925, chose his tomb to be built on the slope of Chau Chu mountain, 10 km from Hue. Its construction began in 1920 and lasted eleven years. Among the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty, his tomb’s architecture was widely criticized for applying concrete elements and incorporating Vietnamese and Western concepts in its structure (admission fee: 55,000 Dong). During the colonial era, such was considered an attempt to decline the Vietnamese culture.

Hue’s Festival The cultural Festival of Hue is celebrated biannually in even-numbered years. The festival is presented with a large number of local and international cultural performers held in several locations within the city. One of the cultural highlights of the festival, an event called “Dem Hoang Cung” offers a fabulous dinner show inside the citadel. During the festival period, hotel bookings should be made in advance. Hue: getting around and transportation.

• Air At Phu Bai Airport (ca. 20 km south of the city center), Vietnam Airlines (office 23 Nguyen Van Cu Street, Tel. 3 824 709) offers several flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) daily.

• Bus Taking Hung Vuong Street, Hue’s main bus station extends 4 km to the southeast. Several connections to Da Nang are available (40,000 Dong, 3 hours). The An Hoa bus station (Hwy 1A), northwest of the citadel, caters northern destinations like Dong Hoi, Dong Ha, Quang Binh. Hue also is a regular stop destination of the “open-tour bus” routes (e.g. Sinh Café’s special service to foreign travellers). Most buses normally drop passengers off in Hung Vuong Street and pick them up from their hotels. Companies like Mandarin and Sinh Café handle bookings for the bus to Laos (e.g. Savannakhet).

• Train Hue’s train station  is at the southwest end of Le Loi Street and offers rides on the Reunification Express Train (Hanoi-Saigon-Hanoi). Destinations included are Hanoi-Hue, Vinh, Danang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh to Hue (Sai gon).
